Mourners at the funeral service of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga were moved to both tears and laughter after his nephew, Jaramogi Orango, delivered a heartfelt yet humorous tribute to the late statesman.

Taking to the podium with a trembling voice, Orango admitted he was nervous addressing the massive crowd gathered to honor his grandfather.

“If I knew I was to speak today, I would have taken something to boost my confidence,” he began.

“Natoa jasho ingine mbaya sana hapa juu. Ningejua nitaongea ningeuliza Uhuru (Kenyatta) anisaidie ile uji alikunywa na Raila,” he added, sending the crowd into laughter.

He humorously explained that he would have asked former President Uhuru Kenyatta to share the “uji” (porridge) he used to drink with Raila, referencing Uhuru’s earlier anecdote about their breakfast moments together.

“I would have asked former President Uhuru Kenyatta to help me with the uji he used to drink with Raila because I’m sweating profusely here—but my mother is by my side,” he quipped.

His remarks briefly lifted the somber mood, reminding mourners of the warmth and humor that often surrounded the Odinga family.

During Raila’s state funeral in Nairobi, Uhuru had fondly recalled sharing chai (tea) and uji with Raila, describing him as a “brother” and a “patriot” who remained loyal to his friends and principles.

Orango went on to reflect on his grandfather’s enduring influence on the youth, saying Raila’s courage and vision would continue to inspire generations.

“I will strive to live courageously like my grandfather, who lived a full life to 80 years,” he said.

The young Orango’s moving tribute added a personal and light-hearted touch to the ceremony, perfectly capturing the spirit of the man many called Jakom.

Raila’s son, Raila Odinga Junior, also paid an emotional tribute to his father, describing him as a steadfast Pan-Africanist and patriot who dedicated his life to democracy and justice.

“We are no longer mourning Jakom, but we are celebrating his life today as we give him a final send-off,” Raila Junior said.

He expressed gratitude to President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and the government for their support during his father’s final journey.

We have received support from President Ruto and the government, which has enabled us to give our father a decent send-off befitting his stature,” he added.

Winnie Odinga also thanked President Ruto for standing with the family during the difficult period.

“We honour you for the support and good work to our family. The King is gone; long live the crown,” she said.

She further appreciated Raila’s loyal staff for their dedication throughout his political and personal life.

Rosemary Odinga remembered her father as a loving and caring parent who always stood by his children and the people of Kenya. She urged Kenyans to emulate Raila’s legacy of courage, integrity, and selfless service to the nation.
