Matatu operators in Kenya have threatened to go on strike beginning Monday, August 26, over what they have termed as high operational costs.
A memo to Public Service Vehicle (PSV) operators, companies, and saccos dated August 21 lists five grievances.
It states that the operational costs have been because of increased fuel levy.
“The matatu industry, together with other transport stakeholders in the public service sector, is deeply concerned about the government’s mishandling of critical issues affecting our industry. As a result, we are compelled to take action,” the memo reads in part.
They also raised the issue of unfairly high premiums by insurance companies and delays and denials in claim settlements.
They will also be protesting aggressive vehicle repossessions, as well as exploitative lending practices by micro finances.
They also cite continuous extortion by police and county askaris in the form of unlawful fines.
The Memo also says there is inefficiency and unfair treatment in PSV regulation and oversight by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).
The strike is set to begin from 6 am on Monday to until further notice.
