Former U.S. President Barack Obama has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister, following mounting questions from Kenyans over his earlier silence on Odinga’s passing.

In an emotional message shared on Saturday, Obama described Odinga as “a true champion of democracy” who dedicated his life to the pursuit of freedom, justice, and unity in Kenya and across Africa.

“Raila Odinga was a true champion of democracy. A child of independence, he endured decades of struggle and sacrifice for the broader cause of freedom and self-governance in Kenya,” Obama stated.

“Time and again, I personally saw him put the interests of his country ahead of his own ambitions. Like few other leaders anywhere, he was willing to choose the path of peaceful reconciliation without compromising his core values.”

The tribute comes just a day before Odinga’s body is laid to rest at his Opoda Farm in Bondo, Siaya County, on Sunday. The burial is expected to draw dignitaries from across Africa and beyond, reflecting his stature as one of the continent’s most influential political figures.

Obama, whose father hailed from Kenya’s Siaya County—the same region as the Odinga family—shared a long and historic connection with the late opposition leader.

Their families’ relationship dates back to the independence era, when Raila’s father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, and Barack Obama Sr. were both prominent voices in Kenya’s early political movement.

While many Kenyans had taken to social media to question Obama’s initial silence, his moving statement has been met with widespread appreciation and emotion.

His words resonated deeply with a nation still in mourning, highlighting Odinga’s lifelong commitment to democracy, peace, and justice.

“Through his life, Raila Odinga set an example not just for Kenyans, but across Africa and around the world. I know he will be missed. Michelle and I send our deepest condolences to his family and to the people of Kenya,” Obama concluded.

Odinga, fondly known as “Baba,” leaves behind a legacy defined by resilience, reform, and an unwavering belief in the power of the people. His decades-long fight for multi-party democracy, electoral justice, and national unity transformed Kenya’s political landscape and inspired generations across Africa.

As the nation prepares to bid him farewell at Opoda Farm, Obama’s tribute serves as a reminder of Odinga’s enduring impact—not only as a politician but as a symbol of courage, reconciliation, and hope for a better Kenya.
