Kenyan rapper Zum C has returned to the limelight with the release of his latest single, Labda — a powerful and introspective track that not only showcases his lyrical depth but also pays homage to the transformation of Kenya’s music production scene.

Labda is a rich fusion of modern Afropop sounds and the raw, streetwise lyricism that Zum C has become known for.

The track delves into the emotional uncertainties of love, life, and ambition, presented in his signature soulful and reflective style.

Beyond its compelling lyrics, the song also serves as a testament to the leaps made in local music production. Speaking to Pulse, Zum C reflected on the journey of the industry.

“Back in the day, we used to record in one-room setups with DIY equipment,” he shared. “Now I’m working with producers who send beats from the US, mix engineers from South Africa, and within hours we can complete a song via Zoom or even WhatsApp. It’s a different era.”

Zum C attributes this evolution to the rise of digital tools and the ease of international collaborations.

Zum C attributes this evolution to the rise of digital tools and the ease of international collaborations. According to him, the barriers that once made professional production inaccessible have been torn down.

“We no longer have to go to South B or downtown studios just to lay a track,” he said. “Today, you can record a hit in your bedroom with a mic and a laptop — and make it to the charts if the sound is right.”

He also highlighted the impact of digital platforms such as YouTube, Audiomack, and Boomplay, noting how they’ve democratized music distribution and empowered emerging artists.

Zum C, who rose through the ranks of Kenya’s underground hip hop scene nearly a decade ago, revealed that Labda is just the beginning. The single is part of a broader, conceptual EP scheduled for release later this year.

Without giving away too much, he teased that the upcoming project will be “a fusion of trap, spoken word, and modern Genge – all telling one story.”

True to his roots, Zum C remains focused on using his music as a tool for more than just entertainment.

“Art has to reflect the times, but also elevate the conversation,” he said.
