Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has expressed deep sorrow following the death of former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua, who repotedly passed away while at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre.
In a heartfelt message, Sonko shared his grief, describing Kimani’s passing as a tragic and premature loss.
“I am saddened to hear about the premature demise of former Citizen TV and NTV journalist Kimani Mbugua at the Mombasa Women Empowerment Mental Rescue Centre. It is believed that he may have taken his own life. I will issue a comprehensive statement once the police report is out. In the meantime, I extend my heartfelt condolences to Kimani’s family, friends, and relatives. I pray that God provides them with strength and comfort during this challenging time. May God rest his soul in eternal peace,” Sonko said.

Mike Sonko was among the few public figures who had come to Kimani’s aid when the journalist’s mental health struggles became public in 2023.
After Kimani shared distressing videos online detailing his battle with bipolar disorder and homelessness, Sonko intervened, rescuing him and facilitating his admission into a rehabilitation center to help him recover.
At the time, Sonko had promised to stand by Kimani and help him rebuild his life, describing him as a “brilliant young man who deserved another chance.”

Kimani’s death has once again sparked a national conversation about mental health awareness and the importance of sustained care for those battling psychological challenges.
Sonko has pledged to release a full statement after the official police report is made public, as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Kimani’s untimely death.
