The 2025 edition of the Annual Journalism Excellence Awards (AJEA) took place on Friday evening at the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi.
Traditionally recognizing journalists in mainstream media, the awards have now expanded to include digital journalism as well.
Organized annually, AJEA serves as a platform to honor outstanding achievements and professionalism in Kenya’s media industry.
The event culminates in a gala dinner celebrating exceptional stories and the journalists behind them.
The revamped AJEA 2025 edition placed a stronger emphasis on recognizing quality journalism across all media platforms.
Speaking during the event, Media Council of Kenya (MCK) CEO David Omwoyo reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to rewarding exceptional storytelling, regardless of the platform used.

This year’s winners are:
1. Agriculture and Food Security Reporting – Ibrahim Karanja (NMG)
2. Animal Welfare Reporting – Hajj Kibwanga (Standard Group) & Evans Barnabas Asiba (RMS)
3. Best Television Production – Smriti Vidyarthi (ex-NMG)
4. Best Radio Production – Geoffrey Otieno (Sifa FM)
5. Best Investigative Reporting – Cynthia Gichiri (Africa Uncensored)
6. Digital Economy & Innovation Reporting – Paul Nyambura (Inooro TV)
7. Environment, Restoration, Blue Economy & Climate Change Reporting – Lilys Njeru (NMG)
8. Financial & Business Reporting – Kevin Omollo (Lake Region Bulletin)
9. Gender & Inclusivity Reporting – Angela Oketch (NMG)
10. Governance & Development Reporting – Rose Wangui (NMG)
11. Health & Substance Abuse Reporting – Brygettes Ngana (NMG)
12. National Cohesion Developing Story Reporting – Alela Linda (TV47)
13. Podcast of the Year – Francis Ngala (KBC)
14. Photojournalist of the Year – Sila Kiplagat (NMG)
15. Press Freedom Award – Africa Uncensored & Amnesty International
16. Sports Reporting – Damaris Kiilu (Radio Africa) & George Ajowi (Radio France International)
17. Tourism Reporting – Charles Muthoni (TV47)
18. Videographer of the Year – Jocelyn Ngatambu (Standard Group)
19. Journalist(s) of the Year – Brygettes Ngana (NMG) and Sam Doe
